The Sweatin’ for a Cure fundraiser was an overwhelming success!!!

On Saturday June 11, 2011, a total of 81 Dedham Health members and non-members committed to, took part in, and exercised to raise money for Cancer.

By SPINNING, dancing, swimming or lifitng....we raised $3060.00

All proceeds fund vital bone and brain cancer research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Sweatin’ for a cure was created to help raise money and promote our annual Summer Sizzle for a Cure on Friday night June 17, 2011.

Why do we sizzle?

Every June, Dedham Health and Athletic Complex turns Summer Club into the outdoor, evening event of the season – Summer Sizzle! The Summer Sizzle for a Cure was created in 2003 to raise money for Bone Cancer Research.  The DHAC Pan-Mass Challenge team, comprised of Dedham police officers, town officials and Dedham health employees, was inspired by the courageous battle of youngster Timothy O’Brien, a local Dedham resident. Timmy  was just 3 when he was diagnosed with Bone Cancer. 

Timmy received in-and-out patient care at Dana-Farber for two years. Sadly, he lost his brave battle with cancer at 5 years-old.  In his memory, DHAC established the annual Summer Sizzle fundraiser. Half of the proceeds go to Dana-Farber’s Timothy O’Brien Jr. Fund.  This fund supports on-going, dedicated research in the area of Osteosarcoma, and is conducted by Dr. Katherine Janeway and her team.

Introducing the DHAC Hydras

On Saturday, April 23rd The DHAC Hydras had their first inter-squad swim meet. They put on a great show!  For many team members, this was their first competitive swim event.

As Head Coach, I had two very important expectations for the meet:  1) That swimmers give it their best, and 2) That swimmers have fun.  Both expectations were met with flying colors.

We are remarkably proud of the following swimmers who participated in the swim meet:

I would like to thank all family & friends that attended the meet to cheer and support our swimmers.  Sometimes attending a swim meet can be a workout in and of itself! 

The Hydras would like to extend a special thanks to Anadi Risal, James Corrigan, Christopher Hayes, and TJ Daly for all their help with timing.  Additional thanks to my good friend and fellow swimmer/ Coach Matt Jordan, who worked as the starter.  Finally, a heartfelt thank you also goes out to Max Lempert and Alyssa Corrigan for their jobs as deck runners.

Princess Tea Party

On Saturday, May 7th the Princesses of DHAC, dressed in their most beautiful ball gowns and gathered together to enjoy an afternoon celebrating their  fanciness! There was a princess story, dress up, crafts, nail painting, face painting, dancing and a tea party.
